Russian Visit 2005by Anja Kuznetsova Report dated April 2005 From 4-11 April 2005, the Center for International and Security Studies at Maryland (CISSM) hosted a group of faculty and students from Moscow’s Institute of U.S. and Canadian Studies (ISKRAN). ISKRAN is part of the Russian Academy of Sciences and home to the School of World Politics and International Security. This visit was part of our joint Collaborative Education and Cooperative Security Project, which started in 2001 with a grant from the Nuclear Threat Initiative to educate the next generation of Russian and American security experts about the dangers posed by prevailing patterns of nuclear weapons deployment and the increased mutual security that could be achieved by shifting from deterrence to reassurance as the organizing principle for operational policies. In March 2005, CISSM received a $400,000 grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York to continue the collaborative education project with ISKRAN and to take an in-depth look at a broader range of security problems, including civil conflict, post-conflict reconstruction, and sustainable development within the constraints of global warming. |
