As global challenges like nation-state conflicts, economic development and trade disputes continue to shape international policy, the need for strong leaders has never been more pressing. Ambassador Susan Schwab, professor emerita and former dean of the School of Public Policy from 1995 to 2003, established the Susan Schwab International Education and Internship Endowed Fund. The goal of the fund is to strengthen the School of Public Policy’s international program offerings by providing graduate students opportunities to immerse themselves in policy issues and environments outside the United States, particularly in developing and emerging countries.
Following her tenure as dean, Schwab held leadership roles within the University System of Maryland, and then went on to serve as the U.S. trade representative under President George W. Bush, where she played a key role in shaping U.S. trade policy. Her experience in international policy highlights her knowledge of the complexities students will explore through this fund.
“The establishment of this fund reflects Ambassador Schwab’s deep commitment to fostering global perspectives among future policy leaders,” said Dean Robert C. Orr. “It is critically important to expose students to international policy challenges and opportunities, ensuring they are prepared to lead in a rapidly changing and interconnected world.”
The Susan Schwab International Education and Internship Fund will support graduate students participating in international education and internship experiences. Preference will be given to students who have not previously traveled to developing countries and who may lack the financial means to participate, ensuring these opportunities are accessible to students who might otherwise not be able to enjoy these opportunities.
By emphasizing engagement in developing and emerging economies, the fund encourages students to explore diverse economic, political, social and cultural environments. Internships and travel to countries for research purposes can help to cultivate a deeper understanding of a broad range of international topics, equipping students with insights that can advance their future careers.
The fund is designed to inspire the next generation of policy leaders and cultivate a legacy of impactful international engagement. Susan Schwab International Fund awardees are encouraged to confront the challenges and seize the opportunities inherent in international policy work, empowering them to make a lasting difference both at home and on a global scale.
